Supplier Spotlight: Peru

For over a decade ethica has been working as a social enterprise in Peru specialising in quality Fair Trade products. They were founded by the Sisters of Saint Joseph with the aim to ensure that every product made would create meaningful change for artisans, their families and communities. ethica work with different groups of women in marginalised and rural areas where they have very little opportunities of earning an income.

ethica is an endorsed Fair Trader of Australia.

ethica partnered with Mantay, an organisation that was founded to help young single mothers and their babies from rural areas or harmful environments.

Their personal development is encouraged by embracing values such as family, self-esteem and cultural identity. Mothers live and heal together in a healthy, enjoyable living environment that teaches social, educational, psychological and career skills.

A leather workshop was created in 2001 as an alternative to training for teenage mothers at risk. Through building capacity of the participants, they are able to receive a wage that allows them to achieve economic independence, whilst caring for their children. The sale of the leather products also gives much needed funds to the house where they are looked after.

You can find some of ethica’s products in the FTAANZ Fair Trade Mother’s Day Shopping Guide. Help support mothers this Mother’s Day.
